  What Do Parent-Child Coalitions Do?

Parent Child Coalitions work with the community to address needs and concerns in the following four areas:

1. Parenting and Family Support: Programs that benefit parents and families by providing activities that enhance parents ability to nurture the healthy development of their children and themselves.
For example, parent education programs, parent support groups, information and referral services, parent-child groups/activities, toy and resource libraries, drop-in activities and child-friendly workplaces.

2. Nutrition/Healthy Lifestyle: Activities and programs that promote good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle through education, community supports, and skills training.
For example, parent education programs, lifestyle counselling, physical activity promotion, food security, nutrition guidance including food preparation and budgeting, and breastfeeding promotion and support.

3. Literacy: Activities that support the learning success of children through opportunities to improve family literacy and numeracy.
For example, adult/child/family literacy programs, reading/writing/storytelling activities, and lending libraries.

4. Community Capacity Building: Activities that support opportunities for community leadership, volunteering, community service, and skill development.
Activities that encourage and support community residents.  For example, continuing education programs, youth support programs, employment programs, leadership opportunities, and community driven projects.

The Inkster Parent Child Coalition also concentrates on a fifth priority area:

5. Safety:
Activities that promote individual safety and well being, healthy relationships and positive decision-making.
For example, self-defence programs, empathy or assertiveness training, family workshops, anger management, anti-bullying programs, and gang awareness.

  Where Did It All Begin?

On March 21, 2001 Tim Sale, Minister of Family Services and Housing, announced on behalf of Healthy Child Manitoba that 22 parent-child centred coalitions across Manitoba would share in more than $750,000 in developmental or implementation funding from the province.   Over the following fiscal year, coalitions were formed across Manitoba.

In September 2002, a network of service providers in Inkster held Community Forums at Sir William Stephenson Library.  The purpose of the forums was to gain insight into the community’s perceptions of present resources and services, as well as to hear ideas on what is needed for families in Inkster.

It was at their meeting on November 15, 2002 that the neighborhood network that held the forums became the “Inkster Parent Child Coalition.” and began working towards a community plan.

Since 2002 the Inkster Parent Child Coalition has received yearly funding from Healthy Child Manitoba to plan and implement projects and programs for the benefit of Inkster families.
